If John McCain was talking to the New York Times for months and knew that a smear story was brewing, why?

didn't he beat them to the punch or fess up ahead of time?. Did he want other Republicans to drop out first? Did the New York Times offer a deal with McCain to wait until after Guliani and Mitt Romney were out of the race before they published this smear story?
