How do YOU know which parts of the Bible to follow?

Christians choose to follow the pages that "conveniently" happen to justify their own personal beliefs, prejudices, etc. For instance someone against gay marriage will quote the "man shall not lie with another man" verse, but will conveniently attribute the pages about stoning your wife and beating your slave as being "metaphors".
