How do the three buffer systems (bicarbonate, phosphate, protein) operate in the body?

I need to write an essay on this topic for my anatomy cl, but I need to understand the basics first. I don't understand how they buffer the blood... the book is too in-depth and it confuses me. Can someone explain it simply? I'll give best answer :)
