I want to stop taking birth control pills and stop getting periods. I am 49. Menapause is better than periods.?

I have been told that the pill is making me have a period. Is this true? Dr. told me I was in peri-menopause in my 30's. I want to be done bleeding. The only reason I went on it is to regulate my periods.
