How do I save my spider plant.?

I went away for about 4 days. When I got back to my home I found that my roommate had dropped my plant on the floor. Dumping out the soil and moving the roots out of the soil. She tried her best to re-plant it, but to no success. It has been since Oct. that I have been trying to nurse it to health again. I have got over 10 babies off the plant in its time. I don't want it to die, but it is looking horrible. It is brown gross and wilted. I took off all the brown dead leaves. I water it once a week and I tried to put plant feed on it and it made it worse.. HELP I don't want to start all over again. This is a great plant that has gave great babies. Is there anything household that i can use or anything I can do to help it get back to HELP
